Dorothy Appleton
I have been interested in art since early childhood when, at age six, I became fascinated by my older
sister’s drawings and writing. Soon I was collaborating with her in illustrating stories. In the small
town of Tweed, Ontario, there was little encouragement for studying art and it was not until after I
moved to Toronto that I encountered dynamic exhibitions and began frequenting art galleries. After a
long career both in X-ray technology and in government work, I moved to Victoria with my husband in
2003. Here, I became acquainted with the vibrant local arts community and took the opportunity to study
at the Vancouver Island School of Art. Always open to new ideas, in my art work I have explored a number
of different subjects using a variety of media and styles. My figurative paintings with a narrative
element are a reflection of my earliest inspirations while my recent explorations of textures and colours
are leading me into new directions.
Since joining Studio Madrona in 2006 I have exhibited with the group in several local shows. My art work
can be found in private collections throughout Canada
