Rosa Marvin Arbour Rosa Marvin Arbour was born in Central America (El Salvador) and has lived in Latin America and The United States until 5 years ago. She now resides in Victoria together with her husband. Marvin (as she likes to be called) started painting at a very young age under her mother's guidance, her mother being a very accomplished painter it was easy for her to follow her mother's footsteps. Later in life, she discovered her talent for Sculpture, alabaster being her preferred medium. Marvin has had many exhibits in Bogota Colombia, New Jersey, New York and Victoria B.C.
picture Evelyn Sisler Beaton Since the age of ten I have studied and practiced art forms with varying degrees of intensity. Always very aware of my surroundings, I delight in the patterns, colours, moods, and rich variety of the natural world. I express and share this interest through watercolour.
Benita Blundell Benita was born and raised in the rural town of Maple Bay, just north of Victoria British Columbia. Influenced to start drawing by her grandmother, Benita soon discovered she had a talent for impressionistic art. Benita attended the Vancouver School of Art and over the years has continued to study and practice impressionist watercolours. Her studies and search for new subjects have taken her through Canada, Asia, Europe and South America. Her work has been exhibited in the Broadmead Gallery, the SookeFine Art Show and in many private showings. Benita continues to enjoy experiencing her work through the eyes of others and hopes that you find her work reflects your memory of a special time and place that is often overlooked.
Erika Boye-Pecoraro

(The Apothecary)
Erika Boye-Pecoraro draws on her background of N. German folk art in some of her stylized paintings which demonstrate a love of bright colours, imagination, and humour. A variety of influences and themes may be detected in her works such as the naïve often featured in children’s art, beach scenes on the Baltic Sea, popular literature, and stylized landscapes which reflect colours and forms of German Expressionist paintings. Since retirement Erika has enjoyed a several art classes in the Monterey Seniors’ Center and participates actively in the Goward House artists’ painting sessions.
Charlene Brown Charlene Brown took up watercolour painting briefly as a teenager at the Banff School of Fine Arts, then didn't get back to it until she was living in the Middle East in the 1990s. There, she wrote 'travel painting' articles for the Gulf News and the Khaleej Times. Some of her work can be seen on her website www.painteverymountain.ca. She now does mixed media and computer paintings as well as watercolour.
Audrey Campsall Early retirement brought me to Victoria and the happenstance meeting with Ninaugh Molson 4 years ago has brought me back to art in the form of Chinese brush painting. A gracious but exacting method of painting, as well as the learning of the use of many different methods, brushes, papers, silk, mounting, silk and papers matting, framing etc. give me many pleasant hours exercising my talent. Many of my paintings have been created with children in mind and for children including, of course, my own children and grandchildren. I am a Director of the Oak Bay Community Artists Association.
picture Frank Churchley Frank Churchley has been watercolour painting since he retired from UVic fifteen years ago. He studied with Fleming Jorgensen at the Metchosin Summer School of the Arts and with Toni Onley at the Old School House, Qualicum Beach. He is a former member of the Victoria Sketch Club and the Oak Bay Art Club. Last year he exhibited in the Masterminds show at the Maltwood, UVic Centre.
picture Arlene Davey After retiring from many years of teaching Fine Art at the secondary school level, I was delighted to discover the refreshing world of Chinese Brush Painting. It has been great to learn some of the traditional techniques of this style of painting. I am fortunate to have studied with Nenagh Molson and John Nip who were inspiring teachers. Chinese Brush Painting presents variety in all aspects, and I love the freshness of the direct quality of the brushwork. The use of unique papers and the intricacies of mounting the finished paintings add challenges which always provide interest and a feeling of accomplishment when completed.
Charles Dool

(Hibiscus)
I initially studied art at Univ. of Alberta, Edmonton, 1962 - 1965 but didn't pursue painting until I retired to Victoria in 1994. I concentrate on BOTANICAL WATERCOLOUR in various forms; i.e. no background, a simple wash, or a fully-painted background. The main goal is to strive for accuracy, so while some of my paintings may look more like a flower landscape, I make a point of including at least one flower up close to include detail. My paintings have now travelled to 11 Countries and 5 Provinces."
Barbara Downie I am a native Victorian and a Chartered Accountant, now retired. I've been a keen photographer all my life and this interest led me into painting. About 20 years ago, I began pencil drawing and watercolour painting, eventually turning to Chinese Brush Painting in the early 1990's and Chinese calligraphy a few years ago. My fascination with this inspirational and challenging medium continues today. Fortunately, I have been able to study under many wonderful artists here in Victoria, most recently under Mr. John Nip. Having participated in many local art shows and sales, including Studio 30 shows at Mayfair and Hillside malls, Oak Bay Library, Monterey Center, and Goward House, I'm still enjoying painting and am looking forward to sharing my work at the next shows.
picture George Fraser Why do I paint? Because I like to. It is a very relaxing hobby. It takes the place of my original hobby which was music.
picture Ann Gibbard

(Fall Tree)
I was born in Victoria and educated in Victoria and Vancouver but lived away for almost forty years before returning “home” to retire. I have studied drawing with Michael Cavanaugh and Elizabeth Spragg, print making with Vesa Peltonen and Chinese brush painting with Nenagh Molson, Andy Lou and John Nip.
Joe Girard The inspiration for my paintings comes from the many scenes viewed and photographed while on camping trips throughout Western Canada and from the many magical days spent on the waters of our Western shores. Boats and things nautical become favourite subjects as well as the inspiration of the antics of the “critter” world I remember so fondly from my rural upbringing.
picture Eleanor Hall Eleanor Hall began her studies in oils while living in Quebec. During the summer months she took part in plein air painting. Since living in Victoria, she has painted with a Monterey group and is now active with the Goward House artists.
picture John L. Hart John L. Hart, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of SpiritBearArtFarm an artist and writers retreat on the West coast of Vancouver Island , an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria and has been a practicing psychotherapist for over 35 years. He considers his painting a form of contemplative practice and has been studying with the distinguished John Nip for seven years in the Ling Lam tradition of Chinese Brush Painting. He is a member of the of the Studio for Perseverance in Study of Calligraphy and Art and the Studio of Harmonious Endeavors.
Michael Hemming Michael Hemming is an art teacher and art historian, now retired. Trained at an art college in England, he came to BC in 1961 where he taught high school in Terrace, Rossland, and most recently, at Victoria High School. During this time, he also pursued his interests in calligraphy and photography. However, his passionate interest has always been drawing and over the past 8 years he has concentrated on the study and practice of life drawing.
Karen Horn I am a mixed-media artist, painting mostly in water-colour, but have also used the mediums of acrylic, pastel and latterly collage. I am a member of the Pandora Arts Collective in Victoria and have had two solo shows and three group shows in their Fernwood gallery and have won eleven awards in two annual Saanich Fair art shows. I have also had several shows in two art galleries in Toronto. I have recently become a member of Goward House.
Amy Kezes Amy has been passionate about art since her teens and has taken-up painting seriously since the nineties. Her work has covered mainly Nature & Travel Scenes, Portraits and increasingly Modern & Abstract paintings, using acrylic, oil or mixed media. In this show she is presenting a sample of two of these areas.
Irene Khurana I was born in Switzerland where I studied architectural design. I later persued studies in graphic design and worked as a commercial artist. Since completing a Visual Arts degree at UVic I have worked and experimented with a variety of mediums. I practice sketching, drawing, and painting landscapes, still life, and portraiture in particular. These I execute spontaneously from life, mainly in pastels, in rapid renderings to instill a sense of immediacy, to capture the feelings and mood of the particular person and particular moment.
Laurence Kitching

Many different things interest me. My hobbies include talking to nice dogs, reading, art history, painting in water colours and acrylics, as well as cooking, photography, and listening to light classical music.
picture Jim McFarland Jim McFarland lives and paints in Victoria, British Columbia. His subjects are taken from real life and are usually painted on site. Loose and unconfined movement of the brush, as well as paint that is bold and lively typifies his work. An active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, with numerous exhibitions. He currently paints with the portrait group at Goward House.
Anne Millar

(Female Cardinal
in Autum)
I was born, grew up and live in Victoria, British Columbia. I became interested in crafts at a very early age, creating Shell pictures and jewellery along with many other crafts. My mother became interested in Ceramics and China Painting and passed along that interest to me. I had the opportunity to delve into Porcelain art in 1977 when a teacher came to Victoria three or four times a year to teach. I was introduced to Porcelain Artists of the Great Northwest (PAGN) and attended their school every two years from 1979 – 1999. It was a wonderful experience and I took classes with many great teachers. I was a member of International Porcelain Artists and Teachers, Porcelain Artists of the Great North West and the World Organization of China Painters for many years, and was a founding member of the local club, The Dogwood Porcelain Painters. I started painting in the Medium of Water Colour in 2000 and find that I bring a lot of my Porcelain Art techniques to this art form. As well, I now bring water colour techniques to my Porcelain Art. It is very rewarding.
Nicholas Naunheimer I began to take Art seriously in 1990, attending the Ontario College of Art for evening and weekend courses. In 1994, I began to work with Graham Bibby at the Studio Academy in Toronto. I consider Graham to be the principal influence in my development as an artist. Until my retirement in 1996, I taught Physics and Chemistry in Ontario Schools. I also served for many years with The Governor General's Horse Guards - an armoured reserve regiment based in Toronto. I have shown with the following Art Organizations: Goward House Artists, Saanich Peninsula Art Council, Sooke Art Show, The Federation of Canadian Artists, The Don Valley Art Group (Toronto), The Equine Art Guild, and The Canadian Wildlife and Animal Group
Mary Piggot Acrylic and watercolour's are my favourite medium. I enjoy painting on canvas, paper, wood, glass and pottery.
Paul Redchurch The artist is a self-taught watercolourist – who uses a little pen and ink, as the spirit moves him. A resident of Victoria for over fifty years, Paul has been painting since retiring from the Public Service and a career in the information technology field. His work covers a wide and versatile range of subjects – from the cottages of his native Yorkshire to Orcas off his Vancouver Island home. Paul has shown his work publicly since 2005 participating in a number of Oak Bay Artist Studio Tours, the Bowker Creek Brush-up and as part of a two-man show at Goward House. Among his commission work, Paul includes a Christmas card for the Municipality of Oak Bay.
picture Richard Reiter

(Sankt. Bartholomäus
Kirche, Königssee)
Richard Reiter, born in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria, educated at teachers’ colleges in Salzburg, Budweis, and New Brunswick, has been a watercolourist for many years. He taught world history at schools in Toronto.

Favourite subjects in his paintings are scenes of his home town with the lakes and mountains of Bavaria which he knows so well from hiking in this tourist paradise.
picture Dorothy Roberts I was born in England but have lived in Victoria since 1968. After a busy career in the health services, raising a family and doing volunteer work, I became interested in learning to express myself through art. I was drawn to study oriental painting by the use of white space, and the methods used to express the chi of the subject through a minimum of brush strokes, and the beauty of the calligraphy. I have studied with professional artist Nenagh Molson and with noted calligrapher John Nip. For several years I have been a member of The Studio of Harmonious Endeavour, a group of artists experienced in Chinese brush painting who meet at Goward House in Cadboro Bay to paint together in a atmosphere of mutual encouragement and critique. Chinese brush painting is my passion, I have collected a number of books on the subject and my goal is to improve my skills through constant practice.
picture Shirley Roberts I enjoy painting old cars, children and Mother Nature in all her stages. The flow of colours together with paint textures inspires me to bring nature to life in a new way-on paper.

I have participated in many art workshops and classes, and as a result have gained knowledge and benefited from the sharing of ideas and techniques. In so doing I have been fortunate to meet many delightful artists and enjoy doing shows with them.
picture Rod Sample I was raised and educated in Saskatchewan, served in the RCNVR (WW2) and had a career as a teacher (mostly English and Music). I am not an accomplished artist, but have had a life-long love of drawing and painting. ...So, when I retired from the classroom, I was finally able to spend more time as a would-be visual artist. The result? A much clearer understanding of the excitement (and the frustration) of being involved in the visual arts.
Irene Stephenson
I have been painting Watercolours, since retirement in 1995, for the Joy and Bliss of the Doing
Atholl Sutherland-Brown As a geologist one frequently sketched rock outcrops or landscapes to reveal structures that the camera could not reveal. On retirement the pleasure in drawing was enhanced by colour expanding to water colours. An engaging hobby.
Ruth Sutherland-Brown Sketching is a personal joy – but appreciation of art by others has been a life long love.
picture Harald Wetklo Harald was a business owner and professional dental technician of thirty years. Busy in his practice, he did always find time to pursue photography and spend time in nature. For the past six years he has committed himself to exploring the medium of water color. Harald has studied with several local artists including Alan Mark Cross, Rita Edwards, Rehona Farrell, Rodger Garbutt, Ann Hunter, Natalie Shumka, Joanne Thomson, Deborah Tilby and Jim Wispinski. Landscapes, seascapes and florals are some of his favourite subjects. Some art work develops for him spontaneously as an abstract. Lately he started to paint with the acrylic medium.
