(After the Rain)
I have been fascinated by the natural world from an early age but came to creating art relatively late. I have worked in science and the history of science and the environment, and include scientific as well as human subjects in my photography, painting, and writing. I love experimenting with different media and styles, and hope that each of my works conveys my interest in the subject I am exploring. As a member of Studio Madrona (formerly Studio 2495) I have participated in group shows such as “Diverse Approaches” (2006), “Eclectic Palette” and “Where on Earth?” (2007), and Look Victoria ’08 (2008). My paintings and photographs are in private collections in Australia, Sweden, the United States, England, Korea, and various part of Canada

Marvin (as she likes to be called) started painting at a very young age under her mother's guidance, her mother being a very accomplished painter it was easy for her to follow her mother's footsteps. Later in life, she discovered her talent for Sculpture, alabaster being her preferred medium. Marvin has had many exhibits in Bogota Colombia, New Jersey, New York and Victoria B.C.

(Across the Field)
Always very aware of my surroundings, I delight in the rich variety of nature, its lines, patterns, colours and moods. Painting is a means of expressing and sharing this enjoyment. I have pursued art with varying degrees of intensity since the age of ten. Studied at the universities of Toronto and Saskatchewan, and at many other classes and workshops. For twelve years I was a potter. I began using watercolour in 1992 and enjoy both its versatility and its challenge. I became a full-time resident of Victoria in 2006.
picture Jo Billung-Meyer

(Ducks and Drakes)
After volunteering at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery as a docent for many years, I became deeply interested in painting and enrolled in many classes and workshops in Victoria and Sidney. Teachers who influenced me the most are: Grant Fuller,Rita Edwards, Gerald Brommer, Judy Morris, and Anne Hunter. I am an active member of Goward House, Windsor Park Art Club, and the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts. With my paintings, I try to share with others, my sense of joy and awe when observing and contemplating the beautiful and complex world in which we live.
picture Benita Blundell

(Westcoast Evening)
Benita was born and raised in the rural town of Maple Bay, just north of Victoria British Columbia. Influenced to start drawing by her grandmother, Benita soon discovered she had a talent for impressionistic art. Benita attended the Vancouver School of Art and over the years has continued to study and practice impressionist watercolours. Her studies and search for new subjects have taken her through Canada, Asia, Europe and South America. Her work has been exhibited in the Broadmead Gallery, the SookeFine Art Show and in many private showings. Benita continues to enjoy experiencing her work through the eyes of others and hopes that you find her work reflects your memory of a special time and place that is often overlooked.
picture Erika Boye-Pecoraro

(Elegant Equestrienne)
Erika Boye-Pecoraro draws on her background of N. German folk art in some of her stylized paintings which demonstrate a love of bright colours, imagination, and humour. A variety of influences and themes may be detected in her works such as the naïve often featured in children’s art, beach scenes on the Baltic Sea, and stylized landscapes which reflect colours and forms of German Expressionist paintings. Since retirement Erika has enjoyed a several art classes in the Monterey Seniors’ Center and participates actively in the Goward House artists’ painting sessions.
picture Charlene Brown Charlene Brown took up watercolour painting briefly as a teenager at the Banff School of Fine Arts, then didn't get back to it until she was living in the Middle East in the 1990s. There, she wrote 'travel painting' articles for the Gulf News and the Khaleej Times. Some of her work can be seen on her website www.painteverymountain.ca. She now does mixed media and computer paintings as well as watercolour.
picture Barbara Burns

(Queenswood Novice)
This versatile artist has been involved in the Victoria Art scene for 40 years. She is well known for her portraits and figures. Her large oil "Mother and Child" has hung in St. George's Chapel (Cadboro Bay) for 40 years. Her work also hangs in the Maltwood Museum (Uvic) permanent collection and many private and corporate collections worldwide. Barbara is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Although basically a "realist", her watercolours are impressionistic.Barbara has traveled widely capturing in watercolour the varied and colourful ambience of countries she has visited."I have tried to paint not only activities but the light, colour and drama of far of places. Images are caught mostly with my camera. Back in my studio much editing takes place. Images do not a painting make. I sketch, move objects, eliminate, compose before attacking the watercolour paper"
picture Audrey Campsall Early retirement brought me to Victoria and the happenstance meeting with Ninaugh Molson 4 years ago has brought me back to art in the form of Chinese brush painting. A gracious but exacting method of painting, as well as the learning of the use of many different methods, brushes, papers, silk, mounting, silk and papers matting, framing etc. give me many pleasant hours exercising my talent. Many of my paintings have been created with children in mind and for children including, of course, my own children and grandchildren. I Have a show that will run in the Oak Bay Municipal Hall for the year 2008.
picture Annelie Dominik

(Eos)
Like many artists I am fascinated by the evolutionary nature of the creative process. My prime motivations include experimentation into the expressive qualities of color and the use of texture to create surfaces rich in contrast. My approach to painting is both intuitive and studied and I find that my mainly non-objective and abstracted compositions allow me to express the sheer joy of pictorial possibilities. I have always been interested in art and hold a Diploma in Graphic Design from the Harrow School of Art, London, England and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Alberta. I am a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and have participated in a number of juried and non-juried exhibitions in Western Canada before moving to Victoria in 2006. My works are in private and commercial collections in various parts of Canada.
picture Charles Dool

(Rosa Nutkana)
Charles Dool - initial studies '62/'65, University of Alberta, Edmonton. Retired to Victoria in 1994 and studied Botanical Watercolour for a year and the rest has been a retirement hobby of exploring and enjoyment of that specialized field. Paintings are represented in 8 countries and 5 Canadian Provinces.
picture Barbara Downie I am a native Victorian and a Chartered Accountant, now retired. I've been a keen photographer all my life and this interest led me into painting. About 20 years ago, I began pencil drawing and watercolour painting, eventually turning to Chinese Brush Painting in the early 1990's and Chinese calligraphy a few years ago. My fascination with this inspirational and challenging medium continues today. Fortunately, I have been able to study under many wonderful artists here in Victoria, most recently under Mr. John Nip. Having participated in many local art shows and sales, including Studio 30 shows at Mayfair and Hillside malls, Oak Bay Library, Monterey Center, and Goward House, I'm still enjoying painting and am looking forward to sharing my work at the next shows.
picture Peg Francis

(Roses)
Peg has been a hobby painter for more than 30 years, attending classes in Victoria taught by Stephen Lowe, Memory Beck, Ed Harris and Glenn Matthews. She has had pictures in a number of shows and Saanichton Fairs, and has won six ribbons at various times. She says she likes to "generally paint understandable subjects in cheerful colours" but lately has had fun doing abstract pictures, often with a geometric foundation. Peg has lived in Saanich for over 50 years and raised three sons and a daughter. After retiring from teaching she was able to devote more time to her love of this creative hobby.
picture Ann Gibbard

(Sea Otter)
I was born in Victoria and educated in Victoria and Vancouver but lived away for almost forty years before returning “home” to retire. I have studied drawing with Michael Cavanaugh and Elizabeth Spragg, print making with Vesa Peltonen and Chinese brush painting with Nenagh Molson, Andy Lou and John Nip.
picture Joe Girard

(Back Off Crow!)
Raised On rural Vancouver Island, I find that I tend to go back to my earlier days for my Art inspiration. The "Best of Times" were those of mucking around in boats and wandering along our costal beaches.

During my career as a public librarian, I did not find much time for Art work. On retirement, in 1995, I tried some watercolouring as a possible hobby, found it intriguing enough to pursue courses and workshops. I have been so blessed to find this to be an excellent retirement hobby.
picture Amy Kezes

She has concentrated on painting seriously for the last fourteen years and participates continuously in official workshops in oil, acrylic, mixed media and watercolours to enhance her technique. picture Laurence Kitching

(Sunset over Hurricane Ridge)
Laurence enjoys brilliant colours and likes to explore the works of several famous artists for inspiration and technique while creating abstract paintings or choosing subjects from photographs taken on his walks around Victoria and on his travels. Accordingly, the driving forces of German Expressionist art and the protean changes in light and majestic nature inspire his subjects. Laurence came to painting after retiring from a university teaching career which included literature and languages and European art history.
picture Jim McFarland

(Yesterday's Sunflowers)
Jim lives and paints in Victoria, British Columbia. He is an active participant in the Goward House portrait group. He paints mainly with acrylics and the images that fill his world. The subjects are taken from real life and are usually painted on site. His paintings usually suggest reality instead of rendering it. He would like to give the viewer final step of recognition. Loose and unconfined movement of the brush, as well as paint that is bold and lively typifies his work.
picture Anne Millar

(Buffon McCaw)
I was born, grew up and live in Victoria, BC. At present I paint in two mediums, Watercolour and the art of Painting on Porcelain. I find that one medium complements the other and I bring techniques from one art form to the other. I taught Porcelain Art from 1986 to 2002. I now devote my time to painting to please myself.
picture Bonny Myers Bonny Myers (BONITA) began painting as a child and has taken formal classes and workshops and worked in many artistic mediums off and on ever since. Her photographs are the tools and memories from which she paints, in a realistic style, landscapes of local and travel scenes. Her works, signed BONITA, are currently in private collections in Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Sydney (Australia), Vancouver and Victoria.
picture Nicholas Naunheimer

(Spring Chores)
I have had a lifelong passion for horses and horsemanship. When an injury ended my riding activities, I transferred my love of horses into art. One of my objectives is to create artwork for people who love and admire horses. My drawings and paintings are in several private collections. I began to take Art seriously in 1990, attending the Ontario College of Art for evening and weekend courses. In 1994, I began to work with Graham Bibby at the Studio Academy in Toronto. I consider Graham to be the principal influence in my development as an artist. I am associated with the following Art Organizations and have shown with The Federation of Canadian Artists, The Don Valley Art Group (Toronto), The Equine Art Guild, and The Canadian Wildlife and Animal Group
picture Paul Redchurch

(Penguins)
The artist, Paul Redchurch, is a self-taught watercolourist – with a little pen and ink thrown in, as the spirit moves him.
Paul has been painting for about ten years since retiring from the BC Public Service and a career in information systems. Paul’s work covers a wide and versatile range of subjects – from the cottages of his native Yorkshire to Orcas off his Vancouver Island home.
A resident of Oak Bay for over 40 years, Paul started showing his works 2005. He has participated in the Oak Bay Artist Studio Tour, the Bowker Creek Brush-Up and in 2007 was part of a month-long two man show at Goward House. A number of his paintings are now in private collections. Many of Paul’s works are available in blank card format through a number of local outlets.
For further information, Paul may be contacted at 592-0456.
picture Walter Riedel

(Impression West Coast)
Walter Riedel came to painting by way of the study and teaching of literature. Starting with a degree in Education with a focus on language, literature and fine arts at the University of Alberta, he went on to complete a Ph.D. in Germanic Studies at McGill University. From 1962 to 2002 he taught at the University of Victoria. Walter Riedel works in watercolor and acrylics. His approach to painting is somewhat experimental. Beginning with locally inspired landscapes and seascapes, he is interested in a process of painting in which the artist takes a step back and relies on the media "to do their thing", being very aware of the fact that the best paintings "paint themselves".
picture Dorothy Roberts

(Hummingbirds-2)
I was born in England but have lived in Victoria since 1968. After a busy career in the health services, raising a family and doing volunteer work, I became interested in learning to express myself through art. I was drawn to study oriental painting by the use of white space, and the methods used to express the chi of the subject through a minimum of brush strokes, and the beauty of the calligraphy. I have studied with professional artist Nenagh Molson and with noted calligrapher John Nip. For several years I have been a member of The Studio of Harmonious Endeavour, a group of artists experienced in Chinese brush painting who meet at Goward House in Cadboro Bay to paint together in a atmosphere of mutual encouragement and critique. Chinese brush painting is my passion, I have collected a number of books on the subject and my goal is to improve my skills through constant practice.
picture Shirley Roberts

(Evening at Rathtrevor)
I have been doing watercolours for many years. The flow of colours and their reaction to the light source is something I try to get just right. The best part of art is the people you meet in your journey to the next painting.
picture Marsha Ross

(Rush-hour Rain)
Marsha Ross has only been painting and sculpting since 2000. She has taken several short courses and classes in both sculpture and portraiture concentrating on figurative art. Her work has been exhibited in group shows of the Studio Madrona art group in Victoria. She and a fellow sculptor held a 2-person sculpture exhibit in November 2007. Her comment about her work: “Human forms and facial expressions have the capacity to stimulate an infinite number of emotional responses from the observer. I find this experience to be the most fascinating of artistic endeavours”.
picture Irene Stephenson
I have been painting Watercolours, since retirement in 1995, for the Joy and Bliss of the Doing
picture Corrine Taylor

(Stepping Out)
To introduce myself, let me say that I have been painting for a number of years and am largely self-taught. I paint simply because I love painting. For me, the pleasure is in the doing or, as Marshall McCluhan said, it’s the process rather than the product! However, the product matters to me a great deal also, and I hope you may find pleasure in my paintings too. My chief joy is in colour—colours I find in the landscape, in flowers, in people, and in patters of light. It is this, I try to depict. For some years, I worked mainly in watercolours. For a little over two years now, I have also been working in acrylics and find this an exciting medium, though I continue my love for watercolours also. As well as the actual process of painting, I am also very interested in the whole history of art and in helping to make the appreciation of art more and more accessible to everyone. To this end, I have been a docent at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria for over twenty years and continue to be active in this way.
picture Bonnie Walmsley

(Amicable Encounter)
I became interested in Chinese Brush Painting a few years ago when a family friend invited me to join a class she was going to take. Not having any experience with art, I discovered this to be a great way to relax and have fun. I also found the history and symbolism behind it to be very interesting. Painting with this group has been great for fun and companionship, knowledge sharing and inspiration.
picture Harald Wetklo Harald was a business owner and professional dental technician of thirty years. Busy in his practice, he did always find time to pursue photography and spend time in nature. For the past six years he has committed himself to exploring the medium of water color. Harald has studied with several local artists including Alan Mark Cross, Rita Edwards, Rehona Farrell, Rodger Garbutt, Ann Hunter, Natalie Shumka, Joanne Thomson, Deborah Tilby and Jim Wispinski. Landscapes, seascapes and florals are some of his favourite subjects. Some art work develops for him spontaneously as an abstract. Lately he started to paint with the acrylic medium.
picture Shelley Wuitchik

(Cherry Blossom Blush)
I began painting two years ago to fill the emotional void that comes from having an empty nest and moving to a new city. I quite simply lose myself in the sheer joy of applying color to an empty canvas. I paint subjects that reflect my love of my family, travel, and the beauty of nature. I find the medium of acrylics allows me to explore in a spontaneous and muti-layered context. Like my life I love the endless possibilites found in new beginnings.
